So – what’s happening in the Edinburgh beer scene over the next seven days?

Monday 24th 8:00pm
Scottish Beers at Appellation CB
Appellation Wines Comely Bank, Comely Bank Rd
Appellation Wines website tickets £10

Ah, Scotland. The greatest brewing nation on Earth. Not convinced? Head down to Appellation Comely Bank on Monday for a tasting of six of the best Scottish beers. We may not be as esteemed as the Belgians, or effervescent as the Americans – but Scottish brewers are putting out some of the very best beers around at the moment. Let Ash and the team guide you through the very latest examples.

Tuesday 25th
Holyrood 9A’s fourth birthday 7:00pm
Holyrood 9A, Holyrood Road
Further Details

Edinburgh now has a fairly huge selection of bars in which to spend your hard-earned cash, and new openings happen seemingly every week. Sometimes, though, the best bars end up as fixtures, and their loyal clientele are continually rewarded. Although four years isn’t a huge amount of time in relative terms, for a bar it’s a great vote of confidence to be open that long. Chances are you already know how good the Holyrood9A is – but if you don’t, then head along on Tuesday for their birthday party and visit one of the city’s very best.

Friday 28th [to Sunday 30th]
IPA Challenge at the Bow Bar
The Bow Bar, 80 West Bow
Further details

Edinburgh beer drinkers may be well aware of the recent 30 day IPA promotion by a city-wide pub chain, attempting to discover which was the best Scottish India Pale Ale (Deuchars IPA came out on top, for the second year running). Well, the Bow Bar is getting in on the act, in even more scientific style. From Friday, fifteen will be on offer, on both cask and keg, to be sampled blind (i.e. with no pump clips, just abv-range). You’ll have a scorecard to tot up how you like them, and the Bow will count all the scores before revealing, truly, what is the favourite IPA of Edinburgh drinkers. Count me in!

Sunday 30th 1:00pm – 4:00pm
BrewLab invade the Hanging Bat
The Hanging Bat, 133 Lothian Rd
Further Information Tickets £38

As the week draws to a close, there’s an ideal opportunity to spend Sunday afternoon learning about the twin joys of coffee and beer (and then, coffee beer itself). The people behind the Edinburgh phenomenon that is BrewLab are heading down to the Hanging Bat to perform a cupping session, before the tables are turned and beer comes out to be tasted. Either side of this, lunch will be served, and afterwards you can watch the Bat’s SabCo brewkit put to use as the assembled experts brew up a coffee-infused beer. Tickets available from the link above, for a great chance to compare and contrast the techniques and flavours involved in making beer and coffee…

The Edinburgh Beer Weekly will be published every Sunday here on the BeerCast. If you have an event in or around the city that you’d like to feature – please get in touch at the usual email address. Cheers!
