So – what’s happening in the Edinburgh beer scene over the next seven days?

Monday 6th [to Friday 10th] [5-8pm]
Battle of the Brewers – Dalkeith
Blacksmith’s Forge, 5 Newmills Rd
Blacksmith’s Forge Twitter feed

The beer drinkers of Dalkeith are in for a treat this coming week, as each day a different set of beers will be appearing at the Blacksmith’s Forge in a five-day battle of the brewers. At stake, a two-month permanent fixture on two of the Forge’s guest taps. Each brewery will be bringing a selection of their ales for the pub-goers to try, and with voting cards everyone will have a say as to their favourite. The festival kicks off on Monday with Houston, before Stewart Brewing takeover on Tuesday. Wednesday is the turn of Harviestoun, with Inveralmond taking part on Thursday, and Broughton Ales rounding things up on Friday the 10th. As well as the beer, there will be prizes on offer, and a buffet for all drinkers. Head down to the Blacksmith’s Forge to take part in this democratic beery by-election.

Monday 6th 8:00pm
American Craft Beers at Appellation
Appellation Wines, 43 Dalry Road
Appellation Wines website tickets £10

Two giants of global drinking pair off against each other on Monday, like rutting male bison squaring up on a windswept prairie. American Craft Beer, and Ashton McCobb. Watch these behemoths snort and paw the ground, warily circling each other, looking to gauge any weakness. Eventually, when it can only ever come down a show of sheer brute strength – try and tear your eyes away as the irresistible force of hop-forward US beer meets the immovable object who runs Appellation Wines. Tickets £10.

Tuesday 7th
Night of Good Beer 8
The Bow Bar, 80 West Bow
Further details

On Tuesday, the Bow Bar is hosting another of their semi-regular ‘Good Beer Nights’. No fuss, no frills, just beers from the following producers – Oakham, Waen, Mikkeller, Thornbridge, Tiny Rebel, Sierra Nevada, Wild Beer Co, Burnside, Stewart Brewing and Fyne Ales. The Oakham offering is a must-try – the peerless (or, practically peerless, if you saw our list) Green Devil IPA, on cask. For keg lovers, highlights include the rare Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye, and SN’s collaboration with Thornbridge, Twin Peaks. Holy moly.

Friday 10th
Meet the Brewer – Tempest Brewing Co [7:00pm]
BrewDog Edinburgh, The Cowgate

To end the week there are two events featuring breweries at the peak of their game. On the same night as the Guildford’s Fyne Ales takeover (see below), BrewDog Edinburgh are hosting a Meet the Brewer session featuring the pride of Kelso, Tempest Brewing. Anyone who was lucky enough to sample their Old Parochial knows the form that Gavin and the rest of the crew are in at the moment, if you’re anywhere near the Cowgate, head along and find out what they are up to next, and how the plans for the new brewery are going.

Friday 10th
Fyne Ales tap takeover/IPA launch
The Guildford Arms, 1 West Register St
Fyne Ales Twitter feed

With so many great pubs and bars in Edinburgh, there are never any shortages for Friday night drinking options, to sink a few beers after work. This coming Friday, though, all the others fade into second place in comparison to the Guildford Arms. Last year, we named Fyne Ales our brewery of the year – so when they come to town (and how), there’s no other place to be. Two brand new IPA’s will be launched – Bell Rock (5.5%) and Bell Rock n’ Hop (6.5%) on cask, with six other beers on offer – including their first ever kegged offering, Hurricane Jack. Get there early.

The Edinburgh Beer Weekly will be published every Sunday here on the BeerCast. If you have an event in or around the city that you’d like to feature – please get in touch at the usual email address. Cheers!
