So – what’s happening in the Edinburgh beer scene over the next seven days?

Monday 29th 8:00pm
Around the world with Pale Ales and IPA
Appellation Wines Comely Bank, Comely Bank Rd
Appellation Wines website tickets £10

This week’s tasting at Appellation takes place at the Comely Bank branch, and features the zippy and accessible world of Pale and India Pale Ales. Join Ash and the team as they guide you through six different beers, and explain the differences between the two styles. Expect lots of hops along the way!

Tuesday 30th 5:00pm
City Cafe relaunches beer menu
19 Blair St
City Cafe website

Blair Street’s City Cafe has long been a fixture of the Edinburgh nightlife scene – at least for as long as I can remember. This week, they are changing tack slightly as they get rid of the imports and the macro and change the beer lineup to an exclusively Scottish one. Head down and sample a few of the new beers, to see if they have made the right decision…

Tuesday 30th 5:00pm
Meet the Brewer – Speyside Craft Brewery
Red Squirrel, 21 Lothian Road
Speyside Craft Brewery website / Red Squirrel website

Edinburgh has been averaging at least one Meet the Brewer event per week for some time – and this week’s involves the up and coming Speyside Craft Brewery. Seb Jones began production in Forres last year, and although his beers have filtered down to these parts in both cask and bottle – Tuesday is the best chance you’ll have to find out what they are about. Head along to the Red Squirrel and chat to Seb, and try his beers at the same time. What could be better?

Thursday 2nd [to Sunday 5th]
Tyne Bank Showcase
The Guildford Arms, 1 West Register St
Tyne Bank Twitter feed

Fresh from their new brew beer festival, this week the Guildford Arms will be featuring beers by the excellent Newcastle brewery Tyne Bank. Expect the beers to fly out, particularly as they are being served at £2.50 a pint. On the bar – Single Blonde, Jamaican Mild, Pacifica Pale and Southern Star. The North-East has a huge number of breweries at the moment, get yourself along to the Guildford this week to sample beers from one of the best.

Thursday 2nd [to Saturday 4th]
Fife Beer Festival
Rothes Halls, Glenrothes
Website, tickets £5 (£4 CAMRA members)

Glenrothes might not be in Edinburgh, but this Thursday the fifteenth Kingdom of Fife Beer Festival takes place there – so surely that’s reason enough for a trip over the water? Over forty real ales will be on offer across the three days, plus ciders, perries, wines, and ‘continental beers’. Also, the Champion Beer of Fife competition winner will be announced. CAMRA members get a discount at the door, and the event runs 4pm-11pm on Thursday, 12pm-12am Friday, and 12pm-11pm on Saturday.

Friday 3rd [to Monday 6th]
Blue Goose Beer Festival
The Blue Goose, 27 Lanark Road

Website / Facebook Page

The May bank holiday weekend has rolled around again, so that means the Blue Goose Beer Festival is also taking place. Last year’s debut festival was a huge success, with live music and BBQ food. Hopefully the weather will hold and the riverside beer garden will be in full operation this time around, as well. When the sun’s out, there are few better beer gardens in the entire city…
The Edinburgh Beer Weekly will be published every Sunday here on the BeerCast. If you have an event in or around the city that you’d like to feature – please get in touch at the usual email address. Cheers!
