So – what’s happening in the Edinburgh beer scene over the next seven days?

Monday 1st
Hop Monday at the Southern
The Southern, 22 South Clerk St
Southern website

The action begins right away this coming week, at the Southern on South Clerk Street. Replacing Blue Monday with Hop Monday, the bar will be laden with plenty of the very best cask and keg offerings to get the week off to the perfect start – including Moor Nor Hop, Weyerbacher Double Simcoe, Alechemy Galaxy Burst, Marble Dobber and Cromarty AKA IPA. There won’t be another Edinburgh bar with a better line-up of hop-forward beers that night, that’s for sure.

Monday 1st 8:00pm
Six styles of German beer
Appellation Wines Comely Bank, Comely Bank Rd
Appellation Wines website tickets £10

Appellation Wines’ new Comely Bank location hosts another of the ‘six styles…’ series on Monday night – and attention turns to the Teutonic powerhouse that is German beer. So; expect lager, a different kind of lager, a dark lager, an unfiltered lager (I joke, of course – German beer is fantastic, and has a huge amount of depth of style). Head down to Comely Bank for six of the best, guided by Ash – who really knows his stuff when it comes to German beers.

Wednesday 3rd 7:00pm
Stewart Brewing Tasting
Theatre Royal, 25 Greenside Lane
Thirty Days of IPA website

As part of the 30 Days of IPA promotion (see link above), a number of events will be taking place across Edinburgh over the next few weeks. One of the first is at the Theatre Royal bar, by the Omni Centre. This coming Wednesday, Stewart Brewing will be there with three of their India Pale Ales – Pentland IPA, Black IPA and the brand new, New Zealand-hopped Ka Pai – which has been quietly getting extremely positive reviews. So, you know where to go to try it!

Wednesday 3rd [to Sun 21st]
Wetherspoons Beer Festival/MTB event
Standing Order, 62 George St (and other locations)
Wetherspoon’s website

Early Spring means it’s SpoonFest time again, as their innumerable branches roll up the sleeves and start dishing out the pints to even larger crowds. As part of the launch, a Meet the Brewer event is taking place at the Standing Order on George Street. Between 6-8pm, you’ll be able to chat to the good folks from Broughton Ales, and sample at least seven of their different beers at the same time.

Friday 5th 7:00pm
Highland Brewing Co tap takeover
Thomson’s Bar, 182-184 Morrison St
Further Information

Thomson’s Bar on Morrison Street have been throwing their famous Aitken founts open to several fantastic breweries of late, and they are set to do so again on Friday. Following last week’s launch of Fyne Ales’ Muckle Flugga, this time they welcome the prowess of the Highland Brewing Company. Rob Hill and Sons put together some truly fantastic beer from their Orkney base, and starting at the end of this week several of them will be on offer, at once. Confirmed so far are Scapa Special, Orkney Best and Dark Munro – but with others such as The Duke, Ale9 and Orkney Blast possibly in attendance, it should be a great night.

Sunday 7th
National Beer Day at the Southern
The Southern, 22 South Clerk St
Southern website

Rather neatly, the action returns, in cyclical fashion, to the Southern at the end of the week, as they celebrate National Beer Day (which apparently really exists). On offer, staff picks. The beers the hard-working Southerneers have enjoyed serving and tasting the most over the past few months. Follow their Twitter Feed as the week progresses for hints as to what will be on – but whatever it is, there’ll be plenty of excuses to start and end the week in Newington…

The Edinburgh Beer Weekly will be published every Sunday here on the BeerCast. If you have an event in or around the city that you’d like to feature – please get in touch at the usual email address. Cheers!
