So – what’s happening in the Edinburgh beer scene over the next seven days?
Monday 25th 8:00pm
Beer and Cheese at Appellation
Appellation Wines, 43 Dalry Road
Appellation Wines website tickets £10
Beer and cheese is the classic food pairing (with the exception of dry roasted or a packet of crisps), and last year Appellation ran an evening matching Scottish beers with everyone’s favourite dessert course. Well, on Monday, cheese pairing returns to Appellation, except this time they’ve gone global (for both the beer and the cheese). Head down to Dalry and see what new classic combos Ash and the staff have come up with.
Tuesday 26th / Wednesday 27th
Meet the Brewer – The Kernel
The Hanging Bat, 133 Lothian Rd
Further Information tickets SOLD OUT (see below)
The latest in the series of Meet the Brewer events to take place at the Hanging Bat rolls around this week – and it features the equivalent of modern British brewing royalty. Evin O’Riordain from the Kernel Brewery will be in town for two nights, and will be bringing all kinds of treats with him for people to sample. If you think royalty might be too strong a word – the tickets sold out for both nights inside an hour (so, maybe Take That are a better analogy than the Royal Family). Although there aren’t any places left for the talk, the beers will be on for Bat customers, so head down on either night and try the products of one of the stars of modern British brewing. Expect it to be busy!
Wednesday 27th
Black Isle tap takeover
Nobles Bar, 44a Constitution St
Further Information
On Wednesday, one of Scotland’s most popular breweries are heading down to Leith to link up with one of their favourite bars. Black Isle have hosted takeovers at Nobles Bar before (like last year, for instance). This time around, alongside the full whack of their flagship beers, also on offer will be barrel-aged versions of the highly-acclaimed 8.4% Black Run, aged in Tomatin whisky and bourbon casks, served on keg. Their oak-aged Hibernator will be making a final appearance – and food and music will also be on offer.
Thursday 28th
Malt Shovel Cask Ale and Cider Festival
The Malt Shovel, 11-15 Cockburn St
Website / Twitter Feed
On Thursday, another of Edinburgh’s pubs launches their beer festival, as the Malt Shovel at the bottom of Cockburn Street kicks off their cask ale and cider event. Follow their Twitter feed to keep up with what goes on when…first up, Wylam Spring Thing, Otter Amber, Jennings Cumberland Ale, Adnams Kristal White, Fyne Ales Avalanche, Maxim Double Maxim, Saltaire Brewery Triple Chocoholic and Brains Barry Island IPA…
Thursday 28th [7:30pm]
Brewery Late at Summerhall
1 Summerhall
Barney’s Beer Facebook tickets £5
Also on Thursday, take the trip to Summerhall for a ‘Brewery Late’ – a tour and tasting session at Barney’s – the on-site brewery in the grounds of the old Dick Vet College. Meet at the Summerhall bar – itself worth a visit – and then head over to see where the magic happens. For the £5, you’ll also get three thirds of Barney’s beers.
Sunday 31st [2:00pm]
30 days of IPA Meet the Brewers
The Pear Tree, West Nicholson St
30 days of IPA Website / Twitter Feed
On Easter Sunday, take a break from chocolate eggs and wander over to the Pear Tree beer garden, where (weather permitting, presumably) eight Scottish breweries will be in attendance to launch the start of this year’s 30 days of IPA. Last year’s month-long celebration of the India Pale Ale was well-received, and there are plenty of events scheduled for the 2013 version – head to the website above for more information. Breweries featuring on Sunday include Broughton, Caledonian, Stewart, Houston, Belhaven, Barneys, Tryst and Williams Bros – some of whom will be showcasing new beers.
The Edinburgh Beer Weekly will be published every Sunday here on the BeerCast. If you have an event in or around the city that you’d like to feature – please get in touch at the usual email address. Cheers!

30 Days of IPA
March 24, 2013Regarding the 30 Days of IPA “Meet The Brewers” event in the Peartree – the brewers will be setting up in a covered area at the back of the garden, so bad weather won’t ruin it! Not that we’re predicting bad weather, it’s spring after all! 😉
