So – what’s happening in the Edinburgh beer scene over the next seven days?

Monday 18th 8:00pm
Six styles of Belgian Beer
Appellation Wines Comely Bank, Comely Bank Rd
Appellation Wines website tickets £10

Belgian beer is usually portrayed as the pinnacle of beery excellence – you may or may not agree, but I don’t think any beer fan can deny Belgian brewing results in some fascinating beer styles. AS such, head down to Appellation Comely Bank on Monday for a tasting of six very different types. Expect dubbels, tripels, trappist beers and the odd lambic and sour. Also, expect each drink poured into your glass to be very different from what came before – which, to me, is the real joy of Belgian beer.

Thursday 21st [to Friday 22nd] 12-12 both days
28th Heriot-Watt Charity Beer Festival
Heriot-Watt Student Union, Edinburgh Campus
Provisional Beer List tickets £5, beers £1.25 per half

Beer festival season is upon us again, and traditionally the first out of the traps are the thirsty students out at Heriot-Watt University. Of course, that particular institution is renowned for its association with beer, being home to the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling. Every year, the Uni puts on a two-day festival, with all proceeds going to charity. Check out the impressive beer list on the link above, and check out our thoughts on last year’s festival here.

Thursday 21st
Thistly Cross/Tempest Launch Snakebite
Brauhaus, 105 Lauriston Place
Further details / Facebook Event Page

Yes, you read that right. Snakebite. East Lothian’s finest Thistly Cross have collaborated with Tempest Brewing Co and re-invented the old student favourite. Since well before my day, many a long-suffering barperson has poured the lager/cider mix – but few will have dispensed the ready-made version. Thistly Cross have added blackcurrants to give it the Diesel quality – and the 5.5%abv result launches in Scotland next Thursday at Brauhaus in Tollcross. To attend, sign up on the Facebook event page!

The Edinburgh Beer Weekly will be published every Sunday here on the BeerCast. If you have an event in or around the city that you’d like to feature – please get in touch at the usual email address. Cheers!
