So – what’s happening in the Edinburgh beer scene over the next seven days?
Monday 11th 8:00pm
Scandinavian Beer at Appellation
Appellation Wines, 43 Dalry Road
Appellation Wines website tickets £10
The Nordic countries have long had a history of producing great beer, but, until recently, only they knew anything about it. The likes of Nøgne Ø and Mikkeller have unleashed a wave of ultra-modern breweries, following in their hop-forward wake. Head down to the Dalry Road Appellation Wines on Monday for a tasting of some of the very best in Scandinavian beer. As the email I got from Appellation says – ‘thick patterned jumpers optional’.
Wednesday 13th
Night of Good Beer
The Bow Bar, 80 West Bow
Further details
On Wednesday, the Bow Bar is hosting another of their semi-regular ‘Good Beer Nights’. No fuss, no frills, just beers from the following producers – Magic Rock, Tempest, Hand Drawn Monkey, Wild Beer Co, Summer Wine, Beer Geek – and four beers from the fantastic RedWillow brewery, including a showcase of the latest in their Faithless Series – a 5.2% chocolate cherry sour, aged in rioja casks. Holy moly.
Thursday 14th [to Sunday 17th]
North Riding Brewery Showcase
The Guildford Arms, 1 West Register St
North Riding Brewery website / Twitter feed
Starting this Thursday (and continuing all weekend) – the Guildford Arms will be featuring beers from Scarborough’s award-winning brewpub, the North Riding brewery. On the bar – the intriguingly named Double C, IBUless, Are there any women here, and Marooned. The latter should prove popular with half of the Guildford’s regulars, as it hints to a memorable day for Hearts FC. All the beers will be on at £2.50 a pint, while they last. Don’t be surprised if they don’t last long!
Friday 15th [to March 25th]
Bert’s Beer Festival
Bert’s Bar, 29 William St
Bert’s Bar Twitter Feed
On Friday, William Street is the place to be, as Bert’s Bar kick off a ten-day beer festival. Head down and try their enormous range of proper pies, and wash one down with an ale or two from the Harviestoun, Houston, Arran, Caledonian, Williams and Orkney Breweries. All at £2.60 a pint…
Sunday 17th
Shout out to Stout
The Southern, 22 South Clerk St
Southern website
St Patrick’s Day needn’t be a flurry of slowly poured Guinness jostled through a throng of foam hat-wearing marketing types. Other alternatives are available. Head down to the Southern for a huge selection of some of the very best porters and stouts, for example. Some of the highlights include the sublime Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout will be there, as will the cherry-infused Tempest Morello Cresta. Wild Beer Co will be sending their smoked tea porter Stick it in your Pipe…and what could be further away from the traditional black stuff that that?
The Edinburgh Beer Weekly will be published every Sunday here on the BeerCast. If you have an event in or around the city that you’d like to feature – please get in touch at the usual email address. Cheers!
