Monday 4th 8:00pm
An Introduction to US craft beer
Appellation Wines Comely Bank, Comely Bank Rd
Appellation Wines website tickets £10
On Monday, the second tasting takes place at Appellation Wines’ new Comely Bank location. This time, the emphasis is Stateside, so put on the cowboy hat and head down to the ultra-hip CoBa neighbourhood to revel in the latest American beer. Ash and the team will be tasting six very different US ales, from IPA’s to stouts. But what exactly is craft beer? Make sure and ask Ash his opinion on that…
Tuesday 5th 8:00pm
Meet the Brewer – Stewart Brewing
Cork and Cask, 136 Marchmont Rd
Cork and Cask website FREE
Following on from our post last week about the advantages to breweries of hosting MTB nights, this week there are another two across the city. The first of these takes place in the Marchmont bottle shop Cork and Cask, which opened it’s doors for the first time last weekend. Head to the new shop to check it out, and also to sample some beers from Stewart Brewing, representatives of whom will be on-hand to talk about their range and their brewing philosophy.
Wednesday 6th 7:00pm
Beer and cheese masterclass
Bon Vivant’s Companion, 51 Thistle St
Further details tickets £20
Edinburgh’s many legions of cheese-fans will be looking forward to Wednesday, when the Bon Vivant’s Companion on Thistle Street are hosting a pairing event. Hosted by Heriot-Watt student Campbell, six beers from the BvC’s shelves will be tasted, each paired with a cheese selected by the team. Campbell’s aim is to keep it casual, and explore the different flavour combinations between the two – which is surely something anyone can look forward to. Tickets are £20, and are available from the shop itself.
Thursday 7th 7:00pm [tour at 7:30pm]
Meet the Brewer – Barney’s Beer
The Southern, 22 South Clerk St
Southern website. Tickets £15 – booking essential – call 0131 662 8926, or reserve a ticket in person at the Southern.
The next night, attention switches to the Southern, as they play host to a very local brewer. Andrew ‘Barney’ Barnett relocated from Falkirk to the Summerhall site last year (we paid him a visit soon afterwards). As the arts/brewing complex is literally behind the Southern, the two have joined forces for a pretty unique MtB event. Alongside the standard introductory chat and beer sampling (three of Barney’s beers will be on offer), the event will also include a burger from the Southern’s menu, then – this is the unusual part – an immediate tour of Barney’s brewery will take place. So, less ‘Meet the Brewer’ and more ‘Back to Mine’…
Thursday 7th 7:00pm
Fyne Ales launch Muckle Flugga
Thomson’s Bar, 182-184 Morrison St
Thomson’s is a rare enclave of the tall Aitken fount, and on Thursday those water-pressure wonders will be dispensing a brand new beer from Fyne Ales. The latest in their lighthouse-themed IPA series – a series that partly was responsible for us naming the Argyll outfit our 2012 brewery of the year – is Muckle Flugga. Thomson’s is the first pub in the country to get some, so head down for the launch event, and enjoy pronouncing the name at the bar when you go back for your third round…
Saturday 9th
Vintage Leith opens
Vintage, 60 Henderson St
The latest in the series of great Edinburgh eateries opens at the weekend, and it’s another great option for the people of Leith. A joint venture between the operating team recently behind the Caley Sample Room and the good folks at Williams Brothers brewery, the Vintage looks to put beer and food as two of it’s cornerstones. Expect a huge amount of British charcuterie, cheese and all sorts of great beer, wine and spirits. Will it be to Edinburgh what the wildly successful Friends of Ham is to Leeds?
The Edinburgh Beer Weekly will be published every Sunday here on the BeerCast. If you have an event in or around the city that you’d like to feature – please get in touch at the usual email address. Cheers!
