So – what’s happening in the Edinburgh beer scene over the next seven days?

Monday 28th [to Sunday 3rd Feb]
Bow Bar Winter Beer Festival
The Bow Bar, 80 West Bow
Beer List part one / part two

The Bow’s Aitken founts will still be working overdrive throughout the week, as their Winter Beer Festival continues. From opening time on Monday afternoon right through to Sunday night, such notable beers as Green Jack Ripper, Moor Old Freddy Walker, Fyne Wee Stoater and Cromarty Hit the Lip will be on offer. If you missed our preview last week – check it out here.

Monday 28th 8:00pm
Winter Beers
Appellation Wines, 43 Dalry Road
Appellation Wines website tickets £7

The first tasting at Appellation Wines for 2013 looks at a very timely subject – beers for winter. Leave the chilled, hoppy IPA’s at home and head down to see what Ash considers the best tipples for the cold weather – particularly in evidence at the moment. Expect dark beers, high alcohol, and rich, malty warmth.

Wednesday 30th 7:00pm – 10:00pm
Appellation Comely Bank launch
Appellation Wines, corner of Comely Bank Road and Comely Bank Avenue
Appellation Wines website

It’s a double header for Ash and the team this week, as on Wednesday the hard-working boozefans will be at it again – only in celebration mode. Ash has been after a second shop for some time, and recently managed to get his hands on the old Thresher’s (and then Winestore) in Comely Bank – on the corner of CB Road and the long, sloping Comely Bank Avenue. To get the new Appellation off with a bang, head down this Wednesday for a tasting evening. Lewis from Black Isle will be there, pouring the full range of their beers – but others will also be on offer.

Thursday 31st 7:30pm
Black Isle launch 2.8%er
The Waiting Room, 7 Belhaven Terrace
Further Details

On Thursday, all eyes (and associated livers) turn to Morningside, and the launch of a new beer from the Black Isle stable. Head Brewer Colin Stronge will be in attendance to discuss his new creation – a 2.8% abv ‘breakfast beer’. How hard was it to get flavour into something at that low gravity? Turn up to find out, and also try other Black Isle beers – including a cask of barrel-aged Hibernator, which would make a great half and half with the 2.8%er [serving suggestion only].

Saturday 2nd 18:00pm
Alesmith Brewing Co tasting
BrewDog Edinburgh, The Cowgate
BrewDog website / Alesmith website tickets £25

BrewDog have been wholesaling beer from San Diego’s Alesmith Brewing Company for a while now, and many of their bottles are available in BrewDog’s bars or through their online shop. On Saturday, you can have the chance to taste a range of their efforts, and decide which might be the ones to look for at a later date. The tasting runs through six beers, and also includes food – at the time of writing, the 4pm session was sold out, but there were still tickets available for the 6pm tasting. For an insight as to what the tasting might be like, a similar event was held recently in Birmingham > link.

The Edinburgh Beer Weekly will be published every Sunday here on the BeerCast. If you have an event in or around the city that you’d like to feature – please get in touch at the usual email address. Cheers!
