So – what’s happening in the Edinburgh beer scene over the next seven days?

Monday 26th 8:00pm
Belgian Christmas beers at Appellation
Appellation Wines, 43 Dalry Road
Appellation Wines website, tickets £10

This event pretty much does what it says – head on down to Dalry on Monday night and join Ash and the team for a tasting of several recently-arrived Belgian Christmas and winter ales. The variety of festive treats from the low countries has increased dramatically here in the UK over the last few years – despite the similarities shared in the style, they can be very different from each other. Get yourself to Appellation and find out why…

Wednesday 28th
Meet the Brewer – Summer Wine
The Hanging Bat, 133 Lothian Rd
Further Information tickets £20 email Jamie@TheHangingBat.com

By now, you will probably be fully aware of the Hanging Bat – Lothian Road’s newest beer bar. If not, you can always look back to our thoughts on the opening night. The Bat will be hosting a series of Meet the Brewer events, as the guys behind the beers on offer travel up to Edinburgh and talk through their philosophy. And it is a talk, too – as the link above explains, the £20 admission gets five thirds of beer, plus food – all amidst discussion involving the brewer. You can even offer suggestions for a beer to be made on the Hanging Bat’s Sabco brewkit, and if yours is chosen, head along to help out.

Thursday 29th 7:00pm-9:00pm
Beer and Cheese evening
The Southern, 22 South Clerk St
Website tickets £20 – call 0131 662 8926 or via Twitter

The day after, Newington’s Southern bar is hosting a classic-sounding beer and cheese pairing night. Why classic? Well, no Taste the Difference Cheddar here – they are joining forces with Edinburgh cheese overlord Ian Mellis to provide the stars of the show. Your £20 ticket gets you pre-tasting nibbles, six beer and cheese pairings, and then a half-pint of your favourite beer of the night. Lyle from Mellis will be on hand to casually chat and answer questions – the Southern are aiming to take any kind of formality out of the event, and just host an evening of great beer, and great cheese. Sounds fantastic.

Saturday 1st 1:00pm-4:00pm
Appellation Wines Portfolio Tasting
St Brides Community Centre, 10 Orwell Terrace
Further Details tickets £20

Appellation Wines hosted a portfolio tasting (aka Church-based booze up) last year – and they are doing the same thing next weekend. A ‘super-tasting’, the afternoon will showcase plenty of the grape-based products – but also a lot of beer. Several Scottish brewers will be in attendance, showing their bottled ranges. As Ash and Erica state – what better way to spend a dark December afternoon, and pick out your Christmas drinks…

The Edinburgh Beer Weekly will be published every Sunday here on the BeerCast. If you have an event in or around the city that you’d like to feature – please get in touch at the usual email address. Cheers!
