So – what’s happening in the Edinburgh beer scene over the next seven days?
Monday 12th 8pm
Scottish Beer with Scottish Cheese Appellation Wines, 43 Dalry Road
Appellation Wines website tickets £10
This week’s Appellation Wine tasting revolves around the most established food pairing for beer (other than crisps/peanuts). Head down for 8 o’clock as Ash and his team guide you through an evening of matching locally-made beer with Scottish cheese. Multiple versions of each will be on offer, for your pairing pleasure.
Tuesday 13th
Meet the brewer – BlackBar Brewing Cloisters Bar, 26 Brougham St
Further Information
On Tuesday this week, Cloisters Bar are hosting a Meet the Brewer event involving a producer that has been rarely (if ever) seen in Scotland to this date. Joseph Kennedy of Cambridgeshire’s BlackBar Brewing Company will be on hand with seven of his beers (full list in the link above), from bitters and pale ales to a 5.8% ‘old style red ale’ made with Belgian yeast. Joseph is one of the many graduates from Heriot-Watt’s world-leading Brewing and Distilling course – so head along to Cloisters and find out what he’s been up to since graduation.
Wednesday 14th
Food pairing evening The Mulroy, 11a-13a William St
Mulroy website tickets £40
‘Tucked away below Birrell & Rainford opticians on William Street’ (according to Google) is the Mulroy – one of the top-ranked restaurants in Edinburgh. On Wednesday, they will be holding a food and beer pairing with Innis & Gunn, led by their founder, Dougal Sharp. Head along to the Mulroy to discover which Innis & Gunn beer pairs best with the various foods on offer. Ring 0131 225 6061 for tickets.
Thursday 15th [to Sunday 18th Nov]
Harviestoun Showcase The Guildford Arms, 1 West Register St
Starting this Thursday – and continuing all weekend – the Guildford Arms will be featuring beers by the excellent Harviestoun Brewery in Alva. With another series of rugby games on over the weekend, expect the beers to fly out, particularly as they are being served at £2.50 a pint. On the bar – Schiehallion, Natural Blonde, Bitter and Twisted and Wild Hop. There can’t be many Scottish breweries with a lineup for four blonde ales like that (although I can think of a couple, before anyone comments)…
Thursday 15th
Bramble’s 6th birthday Bramble, 16a Queen St
Website
Not strictly beer-related (although they do serve beer – and beer cocktails), on Thursday one of the best bars in Edinburgh celebrates its sixth birthday. No mean feat these days, remaining open for that many years – but most people who have been to Bramble realise why. Recently named as one of the world’s top ten bars, load up on cocktails and join in the celebrations.
The Edinburgh Beer Weekly will be published every Sunday here on the BeerCast. If you have an event in or around the city that you’d like to feature – please get in touch at the usual email address. Cheers!
