So – what’s happening in the Edinburgh beer scene over the next seven days?

Monday 15th [to Sunday 21st]
Bow Bar Oktoberfest The Bow Bar, 80 West Bow
Beer List / Twitter feed

There are a flurry of beer festivals in Edinburgh this week, the first of which is ongoing from the weekend – the Bow Bar’s cracking Oktoberfest. Having started on Saturday, there’ll still be plenty of German treats in store over the next few days (full beer list in link above). We previewed the event on Friday – expect to see a BeerCaster or two lurking around in front of the famed Aitken founts on at least one occasion this week. Prost!

Tuesday 16th 7:00pm
Oakham Week Cloisters Bar, 26 Brougham Street

Next up – Monday, when Cloisters will begin featuring the beers of Oakham Ales for several days. A host of different are casks going on – including some launched for the first time. On Tuesday at 7pm the brewers will be in attendance to answer questions, and at the same time the excellent Cloisters kitchen will be putting out pairing dishes and treats such as ‘Oakham Citra-glazed king prawn and salt & pepper squid seafood platter’. How great does that sound?

Wednesday 17th 8:00pm
Bristol Beer Factory takeover The Caley Sample Room, Angle Park Terrace

On Wednesday the Caley Sample Room turn over their array of cask handpulls to the Bristol Beer Factory, as brewer Sam makes the long journey to Edinburgh for a tap takeover. He won’t have travelled alone of course – the Caley will be serving eight BBF beers on cask. Aside from that, and just because he’s such a nice bloke, Sam is also opening the entire range of BBF bottled beers, for a free sampling. Yep, you heard that right – free. Form a queue!

Thursday 18th 7:30pm
Oktoberfest with Knops Beer Company Bia Bistrot, 19 Colinton Rd
Full menu tickets £30

Holy Corner’s Bia Bistrot is one of Edinburgh’s best-kept secrets when it comes to food. The husband and wife team of Roisin & Matthias Llorente have a firm following already – just try booking a table at short notice and you’ll understand. On Thursday, they are teaming up with Edinburgh’s original cuckoo brewer, Rob Knops, for a matching dinner featuring five courses and four beers. The menu looks superb, and with the reputation of the kitchen, will probably not be a let-down.

Friday 19th [to Sunday 21st]
Fyne Ales weekend Thomson’s Bar, 182-184 Morrison St

Thomson’s Bar on Morrison Street is worth a trip simply for the decor – a classic, one-room, stand up drinking shop (although they do have seats), Thomson’s also is a rare enclave of the tall Aitken fount. Well, beginning on Friday those water-pressure wonders will be dispensing nothing but Fyne Ales beer. Are they the best brewery in Scotland? With a lineup including Avalanche, Superior IPA, Vital Spark, the all-conquering Jarl and now the red/black IPA series, they just might be. Great beer in a great pub, what could be better?

Friday 19th [to Monday 22nd]
Born in the Borders Au Bar, 101 Shandwick Place
Contact number 0131 228 2648

Not a million miles away from Morrison’s is the Au Bar on Shandwick Place – and this weekend they are also having a mini beer festival – a good-natured ‘Battle of the Borders’. Nine different ales will be on over the weekend from the Scottish Borders and Broughton Breweries – all at £2.50 a pint. Notch up six different beers and you’ll receive a t-shirt (while stocks last). Our advice? Head to Thomson’s, then the Au Bar, then put your t-shirt on and finish up at the Bow – great Edinburgh pubs, great beer festivals.

The Edinburgh Beer Weekly will be published every Sunday here on the BeerCast. If you have an event in or around the city that you’d like to feature – please get in touch at the usual email address. Cheers!
