So – what’s happening in the Edinburgh beer scene over the next seven days?

Monday 11th 8:00pm
Beer and Yeast Appellation Wines, 43 Dalry Road
Appellation Wines website, tickets £7

Yeast. Every beer drinker’s favourite micro-organism. As beer moves in new and exciting directions, it seems as if the hops (rightly or not) get all the attention. Of course, without the tiny powerhouses working their mysterious magic, all we’d be drinking would be cold hop tea. On Monday, Ashton McCobb will be running through a series of beers with different yeasts, and noting how the resulting flavours can be so different.

Monday 11th [to 30th June]
100 beers in 30 days The Beehive, 18-20 Grassmarket
The Beehive website

The Beehive re-opened it’s doors onto the Grassmarket last week, with a month-long beer festival. If you missed out at the start of June, the casks are still flowing – so head down and check out the new look (particularly the refurbished upstairs bar), and if the weather allows, the outside beer garden. The 100 beer festival runs until the end of June.

Tuesday 12th 7:30pm
Redwillow tap takeover The Caley Sample Room, 58 Angle Park Terr
Caley Sample Room website / Redwillow website

Another week, another awesome tap takeover. In town next Tuesday, Toby McKenzie and several casks of his award-winning Redwillow beer. Rarely seen in Edinburgh pubs, his beers are rapidly gaining a following in Cheshire and the Manchester area – get yourself down to the Caley and find out what all the fuss is about. If his oyster stout Fathomless is on, it’s one of the best examples I’ve ever had.

Wednesday 13th
Stewart Brewing Showcase Doctors Bar, 32 Forrest Rd
Doctor’s website / Event website

On Wednesday, Stewart Brewing are taking over Doctor’s for the evening, in an extensive tap takeover. Eight of their cask ales will be on offer – so pretty much everything the Loanhead brewery currently produce, all on the one night. Also behind the bar, their bespoke ale brewed specially for Doctor’s – and, as with every Stewart event, there’ll be raffle tickets for t-shirts and minikegs throughout the night.

Wednesday 13th 5pm
Red Squirrel Birthday Red Squirrel, 21 Lothian Road
Red Squirrel website

Is it really a year since the Red Squirrel opened it’s doors onto Lothian Road? There may be a growing buzz over another arrival on the street at the moment, but the Squirrel is still packing in the punters and serving great beer. Taking over the old Vat & Fiddle and completely changing the attitude, this week sees the Red Squirrel’s first birthday party – with a red beer theme. Cromarty Brewing’s Red Rocker is just one of the tempting ruby treats on offer on Wednesday.

Friday 15th [to 17th June]
Salisbury Beer Fest The Salisbury Arms, 58 Dalkeith Rd
Salisbury Arms website

This weekend, Dalkeith Road’s Salisbury Arms are holding a three-day beer festival, celebrating the best of Scottish beer. Casks on offer will include those from Knops Beer Co, Harviestoun, Inveralmond, Caledonian and Stewart Brewing. Perfect for combining with a lazy walk in Holyrood Park, work up a thirst and then wander past the new Commie Pool for a beer or three.

Friday 15th, Saturday 16th
Currie Beer and Curry Festival
Gibson Craig Hall, Lanark Rd West
CBDRT website, tickets £15 [Saturday only]

Also this weekend, the Currie Balerno & District Round Table are hosting a beer festival at the Gibson Craig Hall on Lanark Road. The Currie Beer and Curry Festival features 25 cask ales on offer, with the food supplied by Adam Tandoori in Balerno. Although the Friday tickets are sold out, there are still a few available for Saturday – email beer@cbdrt.com for availability. The £15 entry fee includes your first four beer tokens, each equating to a half-pint.

The Edinburgh Beer Weekly will be published every Sunday here on the BeerCast. If you have an event in or around the city that you’d like to feature – please get in touch at the usual email address. Cheers!
