So – what’s happening in the Edinburgh beer scene over the next seven days?

Monday 28th 8:00pm
Meet the Brewer – Ayr Appellation Wines, 43 Dalry Road
Appellation Wines website, tickets £7

There are two meet the brewer events happening in Edinburgh this coming week, with the first of them taking place on Monday at Appellation Wines. Ash will be visited by Anthony Valenti of Ayr Brewing – and will be leading a tasting of the entire Ayr bottled range, including the launch of their brand new beer Dr Hornbook – a 7.2% blonde Imperial Stout. We’ll be there too, interviewing Anthony for the BeerCast – but don’t let that put you off, it should be a great night.

Wednesday 30th 7:00pm
Battle of the Brewers III Cloisters Bar, 26 Brougham Street,
The Bow Bar, 80 West Bow,
The Stockbridge Tap, 2-6 Raeburn Place
BotB details, Stewart Brewing’s website, tickets £5

Stewart Brewing are fond of putting their reputation on the line, and are sitting pretty following two wins in their previous Battle of the Brewers events – against Williams Brothers and Harviestoun. This Wednesday, Cairngorm are the opponents in the latest BotB. Both will produce a red IPA, and you get to vote for your favourite. Will Stewart win again? Or will the Aviemoreians record the first defeat for the Loanheaders? This time the event will be spread over three pubs simultaneously, so you can head to Cloisters, the Bow Bar or the Stockbridge Tap and take part. Tickets must be bought in advance, however, from the Stewart Brewing website.

Wednesday 30th 6:00-7:30pm
Scottish beer and food pairing Whighams Wine Cellars, 13 Hope St
Whighams Wine Cellars, Tickets £15

Also on Wednesday, Vino Wines are co-ordinating an early evening of beer and food at Whigham’s Wine Cellars on Charlotte Square. The Vino team will be supplying the beer, and the chefs at Whigham’s will be putting on the food – all with a Scottish theme. Tickets are £15, and are available from Whigham’s in person, or over the phone by calling 0131 005 8674.

Thursday 31st 7:15pm
Craft Cider at the Caley The Caley Sample Room, 58 Angle Park Terr
Caley Sample Room website / JK Scrumpy website, tickets £10

We might be the BeerCast – but should you be interested in the growing wave of craft cider arriving from the US, then there’s an event for you in town this week, as well! The Caley Sample Room are hosting JK’s Organic Scrumpy from Michigan – Bruce and Zack are over from the States, and will be leading a tutored tasting of their cider – as well as cider brandy from the Carolina distillery, iced cider and Glenglassaugh whisky cider from our very own Thistly Cross. For the non-apple curious, there will also be decent beer on from Tempest, Bacchus and Victory Brewing, Plus canapés!

Thursday 31st 7:00-9:00pm
Meet the Brewer – Inveralmond Doctors Bar, 32 Forrest Rd
Doctor’s website / Inveralmond website

The second meet the brewer night in Edinburgh this week is at the refurbished Doctor’s Bar at the top of the Meadows, on Thursday. The affable Graeme Hirstwood from Inveralmond will be propping up the bar, talking about his beers and the though processes behind them. As you can imagine, there’ll be plenty of them available for discussion – Independence, Lia Fail, Thrappledouser, Inkie Pinkie and Ossian. Be sure and ask Graeme what all those names mean…

Friday 1st [to 30th June]
100 beers in 30 days The Beehive, 18-20 Grassmarket
The Beehive website

Showing the IPA crowd how it should be done, the Beehive are launching their own month-long festival at the start of June – serving 100 different cask ales over the course of the thirty days. Scottish brewers will be well-represented, of course, and beers will be on from Broughton, Kelburn, Stewart Brewing, Houston and more. Plenty of casks from producers in the North of England will be on too, and it should be a great chance to check out the recent work done on the Beehive – not to mention try out that beer garden (weather permitting).

Saturday 2nd [to 5th June]
Grey Horse Beer Festival Main St, Baberton, Balerno
Grey Horse website

Last, but not least, Balerno’s community pub the Grey Horse is hosting a beer festival over the Diamond Jubilee weekend. Licensee Paul Ng has been working hard to get the beer quality improved at the Grey Horse, and over the long weekend thirteen ales will be on, most served from the cask. My old driving instructor lives in Balerno – so if you see him, buy him a pint (once he’s finished work, of course).

The Edinburgh Beer Weekly will be published every Sunday here on the BeerCast. If you have an event in or around the city that you’d like to feature – please get in touch at the usual email address. Cheers!
