I shall be watching your planning of this trip with interest. We fully intend to do the same thing at some point. We, handily, have friends in San Diego that are long overdue being graced with our presence and live a 'Stones' throw (see what I did there?) away from the Stone brewery. Think of yourselves as trailblazers :)

He's extremely enthusiastic, which is just great. I'm sure plenty of other pubs will be taking his beer on - I'd definitely contact him about the SRAF Owen, he'd surely send some casks your way. Bottles coming soon, we'll all have to get hold of them when they appear. I'm not sure if I can reveal what his second beer is or not - but it's very different to Happy Chappy.

I too tried the Lovi 69 a few months back on keg at The Rake in Borough Market, I was really impressed, shame I've not seen any since.

Hehe I never clocked the pics but I have to admit finding new & interesting places to photograph beers for the blog can be tricky to say the least.

I admit to not knowing anything about breweries in Northern Ireland Steve - but if any beers make it over to Edinburgh I'll be sure and check them out. What is it about those two that make them worth keeping an eye on?

It's the 2011 Southern Hemisphere Steve, I couldn't get the 2010 - and as you say it would disadvantage it a bit being a bit older....the Citra has probably faded a bit too, looking forward to having it again though...mmm hops!

A whole day? We spent 2 frantic hours! No thanks to my slapdash shucking skills, good job Toby and @Misterjk knew their way around an oyster shell. Was worth every stab in the palm though, it turned out perfect :) It was my first ever brew day too, so on top of cask washing, racking, cleaning numerous vessels and of course brewing it was a fantastic deep-end introduction to brewing. How Toby does it all in a day I'm still not sure. A top man, and I'll have long happy memories of the brewday, and the wonderful beer that resulted.

Actually Stuart my 'open category' nomination was almost <strong>'Best innovation in online sales' </strong> for you guys recycling the delivery packaging on the next order. Beer fans get so much expensively-produced cardboard, it's great to see someone tackling the idea (assuming nobody else has thought of it). But that Garlic Beer was so overwhelmingly foul, it needed a nomination of it's own...

Thing is, I only ever saw (and tried) it once - at the FyneFest. Maybe that made it even nicer, but most other people that got to drink it seem to agree

Stay tuned for the rest of our choices - could be some from your neck of the woods Leigh ;)

As Leigh has commented it is really regionally focussed on the brewery and beer front, it'l be interesting to see how everything pans out in the new year?

Kernel 100 Centennial is one hell of a beer. Cheers

Maybe Micheladas and the like should be bracketed in the 'haggis category' - i.e. you might not like the idea, but just try it. Don't think about how it's made...

The UK has always had plenty of stronger beer available, if you knew where to look - so I'm not claiming the last few years are unique. But there certainly seem to be more big beer available now than there was even five years ago. Certainly, a large part of this is down to BrewDog, but also of course the newer generation of brewers are being influenced more and more by what's going on over the Atlantic.

I've not spoken directly with any brewer about whether they are willing to push the gravity boat out, irrespective of the tax implication - other than smaller-scale producers who are experimenting as they establish themselves, or are too small to take any undue hits from the treasury. But it would be interesting to find out.

Nice post, we tried out some micheladas when we were doing the winter cocktail list. I quite like em but they didn't go down that well at all. A step too far for many. Think you're right though, this is not really beer, it's a cocktail made with beer - as such people should refrain from freaking out too much...

Rich, thanks for this thoughtful look at the ABV differences between the US and UK.

Have you talked to brewers about how taxation affects their willingness to produce high-gravity beers? I agree that the tax rate is probably the primary reason for the "ABV Gap", but I wonder how drastically it alters the beer landscape over the pond?

What are some of the highest-gravity brews you can procure in the UK (other than the one-off BrewDog offerings)?

Great selection of British Beer Labels, BeerCasters! While I'm heavily biased towards Stateside labels, there's no denying that UK craft breweries churn out some beautiful artwork as well. The Atlantic IPA is a winner...reminds me of some of the detailed doodles you see on the New Belgium Lips of Faith series.

I really like the Human Cannonball (it looks like it would fit in perfectly as a Metropolitan Brewing label) and the simple, clean look of the Kernel brews. Thanks for bringing some of these breweries to our attention and for defending the "Label Honor" of your Kingdom.

Mad Derek also put in an appearance, but was subdued. Maybe the medication is starting to work. Next visit due, so will report further developments.

A couple of notes while we prepare a proper retort:

1. Had to look up the Scalextric reference, which I found in the Urban Dictionary. How vulgar yet quaint. Don't you play video games over there?

2. Your father is from Liverpool but you support Blackburn? Explain.

I've only tried the Red Kite (cask) and Hibernator (bottle) in the past, and have enjoyed them. But that's not my reason for commenting here. I just want to say that I love that photo. Very nicely composed.

I think it'll be a good thing...it could potentially mean supermarkets stop inflating the price on other goods to cover the costs for loss-leader alcohol, or at the very least mean they need to try to find something else to drive footfall. I want the days of 3p baked beans again!

In most cases it won't affect cornershops, specialist retailers or on-trade...it will only effect the supermarkets as long as they dont plan to keep raising it in the future...that's where the issue comes in.

Leigh - Some good strong stuff appearing in your neck of the woods too, I need to get hold of some of those Summer Wine bottles...

Dave - We will indeed be turning our attention to minimum pricing, should be a post up on the subject early next week - once I've worked out what it all means with HSBD factored in. So maybe later on next week...

Thanks for the series of articles about HSBD - couldn't agree me. On top of that, it was interesting to hear this week about that the Scottish Government will definitely push ahead with plans for minimum pricing for alcohol. These are likely to be passed by the Scottish Parliament next year - although the detail has still to be announced, including the crucial cost per unit. Would be interestedif the intrepid BeerCast team could consider how these two bits of legislation will interact, and what impact they will have on what we pay for our quality beer. Will we be hit by one or the other? Will they cancel each other out? Is it going be a double whammy in Scotland?

Can we just scotch one growing myth? I didn't say it WAS a disaster, I said a very quick glance found enough errors to suggest that from a brewing history point of view it might be.

Thanks for the nice words, btw.

I was looking towards Justin's post on the Moor website, he said there that if they manage to get some barrels together to put a new vintage of Fusion out, it'll retail for '£15-£20 a bottle' - so 50-100% increase is pretty significant. Of course, there's no telling if this will be the eventual price point, as it's all conjecture at the moment.

Brian, I've seen Nøgne Ø beer onsale at Appellation Wines on Dalry Road (they have about ten different beers of theirs), also at Peckham's in Bruntsfield. I think James Wroebel had some at Cornelius, but not 100% about that. I've not been over to Great Grog for a while - Appellation's probably your best best, if you're near Haymarket.

"But at 8%, if they can produce another run, at the very least it will face a significant price increase"

Fusion, at 10 quid a bottle, even if the tax added a pound would only see a 10% price rise, I wouldn't really call that significant. I agree the tax is unfair and misguided but I don't really understand why a 50p-£1 increase in a bottle of artisan beer bought by relatively wealthy consumers would really prevent brewers from making it.

Well put Brother Barley. The facts followed by the common sense. I couldn't agree more with your comment on "those who can pay, will pay". I fear that the whole policy was rigged towards this in the first place. The policy makers would know only too well that beer lovers will find the money and this just amounts to abusive legislation on an already strained tax payer! Quite unbelievable really, but they are getting away with it all the same.
(P.s. thanks for the link).

It certainly does Lars - I don't quite know how you'd categorise Nanny State. RateBeer just have it as a low alcohol beer, which doesn't exactly tell the full story. I had the 1.1% 2009 version, and it was horrendous. Apparently the newer 0.5% is better - BrewDog referred to it as a Pale Ale if I remember, although probably tongue in cheek...

Doc – sounds fascinating, eh? I've tried alcohol free porters – although <a href="http://thebeercast.com/2010/06/dark-cheers.html" rel="nofollow">Dark Cheers</a> is probably just a black lager. But to get an alcohol-free Imperial Stout would be really interesting. What next? 0% DIPA?... Alcohol-free <del datetime="2011-10-14T12:42:39+00:00">India Black</del>…<del datetime="2011-10-14T12:42:39+00:00">Cascadian</del>…Black IPA?...Westvleteren 0?
Norway has a quota of 1042 minke whales a year, we usually kill 5-600. Out of a population of an estimated 103000 individuals (IWC, the people who made the law against whaling) in the northeastern atlantic, that's 0.6% a year. This site (http://www.environment.gov.au/cgi-bin/sprat/public/publicspecies.pl?taxon_id=67812) which seems fairly neutral, claims 78% production rate, mortality rate unknown. Surely 0.6% is a sustainable amount.

You say whales are intelligent mammals, and I am sure this is correct for some species, if not most. Again, does that mean they are more worthy of life than chickens, cows and pigs? If so, where do we draw the line? And who gets to decide?

Good to hear you don't eat meat at all, otherwise you would indeed come off as a hypocrite. I still can't see how 2 minutes of pain is worse than a life of imprisonment, which is the case for most farmed animals. Also, unless the farmed animals are slaughtered on site, they have to be transported which stresses them out quite a lot. Yes, whales suffer when killed, but so does any free wild animal we hunt unless the shot kills them instantly.

I realize you're one of those meat is murder people, so we will never agree on this. I just hope Nøgne Ø isn't the only brewery you boicot, because I am sure a lot of breweries give tips about what kind of meat dish the beer goes well with, or have brewpubs that serve burgers or other meat dishes. And not all of those meats are free range, organic fed, painfree life and clean death, perfectly farmed meats.

I am in no way a big pro whaler, but upon reading your comment, I became genuinely interested why people are still so mad at Norway for whaling. I mean, even Obama told us to cut it out last time he visited. I understand how people can oppose to Japans practice with their lying and scheming about hunting for scientific reasons then selling the meat on the black market. We never said it was for anything other than commercial gain, and it's such a small business here. I find it odd, is all.

@Richard Haha, sorry, I didn't mean I would never check the website out ever again, I meant the comments. Seems like we both did though.

Hi Lars.

I don't eat meat, but at least farmed animals are stunned before they are killed and feel little pain. Whales hunted in the open ocean are shot with an explosive harpoon. The average time taken for the whale to die following the harpooning is 2 minutes. Imagine that. being shot and it taking two minutes to die. Imagine how you would feel. A whale is a sentient intelligent mammal. Just because they can't talk doesn't mean they can't suffer.

Do not believe the shit the whaling lobby preach about the sustainability of the Norwegian whale slaughter. The fact that one species is relatively abundant compared to other decimated species means fuck all.

Yes it is wrong to kill animals for food. We don't need to. If we don't eat meat, we'll all be healthier and the environment will be better off. Eating animals is a throwback to a the past when we had to hunt to live. We have developed in so many ways. We have indoor plumbing so we don't have to shit in the woods, we can grow enough plant based food so we don't have to murder whales.

Whale murder is indefensible. Only the criminal tries to defend his crime.

Please don't judge me, but I want to try the Inferial if they ever make it again. I mean, when is the next time I'll ever come across a non-alcoholic that's anything but an adjunct lager? I'm intrigued. I promise to proceed and chase it with a high-octane Imperial Stout if that makes you feel better.

Then you better not eat meat at all Colin. At least whales are free as long as they live, not crammed in small compartments for most of their lives, barely ever out in the sunlight. Sure, some aren't killed instantly, but a whole life in freedom that ends with a few minutes of suffering is surely better than a life of suffering ended by a humane killing.

I've never understood why whales are such a thing for some people. The only two vallid reasons should be their intelligence and sustainability, and the latter isn't much of a problem anymore. Sure, some species were and are endangered. Norway only hunts one species of whale now, and it's not endangered.

So that leaves the intelligence question. Is it wrong to kill animals for food if they show some resemblance of intelligence? If so, where do we draw the line? Are dumber animals less worthy of decent lives and clean deaths? Too bad none of us are likely to check this page again, would like to hear some solid points.

A very good point, I can think of nothing worse than sticking to the same beer throughout a session, never mind every day as some folks do. That said I drank 3 pints of Springhead Leveller on the trot last night, although that was purely down to a crap selection otherwise available.

For me the future is in the next new and interesting beer, be that a pint of cask, a half of a stronger craft style keg or a Belgian bottle, more to get my tastebuds around, less to glug every time in my opinion.

Cheers Phil

Our thoughts are with our UK brethren (and sistren). While we have our own legislative battles to fight here, this "strong beer tax" is utterly ludicrous. It reminds me of the debate we had in Alabama when trying to change the laws to allow beer stronger than 6% ABV to be sold in the state. If I recall correctly, one legislator said that if the so-called "Gourmet Beer Bill" passed, the streets would be littered with the bodies of teenagers (I'm paraphrasing). And, of course, after the law passed, drunk driving accidents actually decreased.

It never ceases to amaze me how often governments attempt to solve a problem by addressing the entirely wrong issues. The "strong beer tax" looks wonderful during an election cycle, but it fixes nothing and only frustrates thoughtful British Aleheads who clearly are NOT the problem when it comes to problem drinking in the UK. Stay strong!

I love the Euston Tap. I've been there once a fortnight or so (thanks to regular trips to work HQ in Blackfriars and an evening train back to Manchester) ever since it opened and have enjoyed some amazing beers there. I've only got two more trips scheduled before I change jobs (the new HQ is in Nottingham) and I think it's definitely the thing I'll miss most about my old job...

End of an Era, sad to hear about The old McEwans Fountain brewery! I loved to smell the brew work back in 1995 when I worked in Kirkcaldy at Strand Lighting. I would come in the train across the Firth of Forth bridge to Endinburgh. I still have an advert from WM Younger, "a beer with a bite". I guess the brewery got the bite about 100 years after the sign was made. It is very sad to hear about all the brewery consolidation in the UK! Just this past June another brewery I vistited in England, Tetley's closed.
Continue to support local free ale houses like the Harbour Bar in Kirkaldy. Also dont forget to support CAMRA, The Campaign for Real Ale. Keep the rich ale history alive and think and drink local!

Precisely – I just don't think that many 'problem drinkers' go for strong beer these days anyway – other than the Special Brew toting characters, and they don't buy it from Tesco. The Saturday night fighters and pukers get minced before they head out – on cider, twenty cans of Fosters, cheap vodka etc etc. These are the 'problem drinks'. The fact that alcohol legislation always seems to be piecemeal and arbitrary in formation creates these opportunities for avoidance. The brewers can't wriggle out of it so easily, unfortunately – they either have to pay up or change the recipe.

The "supermarkets" haven't dodged it -- all businesses in England have.

Wine bought by the case isn't exactly the problem the legislation was aimed at anyway.

Oh also, I had a great brown beer, cheese & bacon soup at Straffe Hendrick / Halve Maan brewery in Bruges on another occasion - and it was really sublime. So that side of the triangle can work too :-)

I too would have been against the 'beer and ice cream' suggestion, had I not been introduced to perhaps the one time that it does work - I was dining with beery friends in Bruges, and at the end of the set meal, a desert of plain but good quality vanilla ice cream was served. One of the party also ordered a small bottle of Lindemans Kriek, and insisted I do the same. Normally that beer would be too sweet & syrupy for my liking - I prefer a Girardin, Cantillon or Boon Kriek - but I did as I was told. Then they poured most of the bottle over their ice cream. I was skeptical to say the least but I'm always up for experimentation and having my untested viewpoint challenged, so I tried it myself. It actually worked very well - the vanilla brought out a kind of almondy/marzipan flavour from the beer, and overall it tasted a bit like a Battenburg-cake flavoured pudding. It was lovely, and I don't normally even go for dessert! So, there you go - the one time I was surprised to find, ice cream and beer DID mix!

I'd had the Utopias before - at another multimulti-beer evening, so passed on it. Fascinating stuff, even if it tastes like a sweet sherry rather than a beer. Let us know when you're in town again, I'm sure Craig will organise something

Look forward to the next tasting

Also looking forward to my 23 bottles of kernel coming from the bottle shop :D

Hiya Michael. Sadly the generally accepted practice in the UK is to pay the same price for beer you take away from the pub in a growler and what you would pay to drink it at the bar. We have one of the dumpy growlers and have been known to use it, particularly when a beer comes on that I know I won't see again. I like mine because it's designed for real ale. BrewDog branding aside, I wouldn't buy one of their growlers because they are insulated and designed for keg beer. Clever idea but I'm not the target market. Taking home bottles of Hop 15 for 8 pounds a pop makes a lot of sense to me but not a growler of Punk IPA or, God forbid, something imported for 4 pounds+ for a half! Also, I get some funny looks from people when referring to my vessel as a growler, apparently that means something else here!

I recently bought a growler from the new Brew Dog in Glasgow and was a bit surprised when the it came in at just under £15. While I can only speak for my home state of New Mexico, growlers are generally a big hit with the microbrew crowd. There's a small redeemable deposit on the 1/2 gallon bottle itself (~$2), then it's filled with your choice of beer for about a dollar cheaper per pint. Perfect of barbeques. I think Brew Dog may be missing the point here. By charging the same price per pint as they would in the pub, the appeal of the growler is gone.

Great comment Stephen - I would recommend our Best New Bottled Beer of 2010 - abv 3.8% - but it happens to be the grapefruity wonder that is Fyne Ales Jarl. Bottles from up here that taste like draught pub bitter - I'd go with Arran Ale, Fyne Maverick or Orkney Raven Ale...
